The brief was to design a memorial for a chosen demographic as well as a mortuarium for interment preparation on Hart Island, New York's Public Cemetery.
For over 150 years, Hart Island has been the resting place of New York's marginalised and indigent population. Approximately 40% of those interred on Hart Island since the 1980s have been infants. Due to its location, and previous ownership by the Departments of Corrections, access has been limited. With the reallocation of management to New York Parks, an opportunity has arisen to develop the landscape into a memorial park rather than a forgotten cemetery.
Absent Echoes is a place where the cycle of life is honoured, yet interrupted - a reminder of imagined futures once held close, but forever lost. A space where loss can be both expressed and healed, a reminder that even in the midst of sorrow, hope lingers.
